The University men’s club soccer team had a tough run of things at the 2008 NIRSA National Championship tournament this past weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Ducks, who qualified for nationals for the fourth consecutive year, matched up with two of the strongest teams in the tournament during pool play at Ohio State University and Colorado State University.
In the first game, Oregon took on Colorado State and played tough throughout the game but came up just short with a 2-1 defeat. Just a few hours later the Ducks matched up with the Ohio State Buckeyes in an equally difficult game. The Buckeyes proved to be too much for Oregon, who came out with a 4-2 loss.
Though they were down 0-2 in their first two games, Oregon still had a fighting chance at taking the consolation championship. The Ducks matched up with Baylor University on Friday evening in what would be their final game of the 2008 season. The Ducks’ main struggle throughout the game was on the offensive end, as they were unable to notch a single goal while holding Baylor to only one.
Both Colorado State and Ohio State made it to the final four before falling to the Indiana Hoosiers. OSU’s loss came down to a 7-6 shootout in favor of Indiana, while CSU lost 1-0 in the national title game. Baylor nearly took the consolation championship but came up short in a 3-2 loss to the University of Arizona.
