There is a new threat to our campus society, and I’m not talking about the immense slew of incoming freshmen – it’s bikers. They whiz by you and nearly miss slamming into you as you just try to navigate your way through the clusters of people to get to class. They have no respect for pedestrians whatsoever. They do not signal, or shout “watch out!” if they are about to have a close call. I myself have been hit twice by a biker, just in the four weeks of this term, and did I get even the slightest courtesy like an apology? No! I got yelled at.
We are in college now, and therefore adults, so we should have the maturity to apologize if we have an accident which results in harming a person in some way. The bottom line really is bikers need to be more careful.
Crossing East 13th Avenue by the EMU is like crossing Franklin Boulevard without a crosswalk. It is insane; there are too many people and too many reckless riders. I would love to propose a measure, one that bans bikes on most areas on campus, including but not limited too the busiest area on campus: all around the EMU. However, I have a feeling that my proposal will get nowhere because of the dominance of the biking community.
In all honesty, I know that all I can do is speak up about this issue. I’ll just ask that the bikers show more respect and care while riding through the crowded areas of campus.
