The Oregon men’s basketball team held a scrimmage Thursday night at McArthur Court, free and open to the public, featuring a green and a yellow squad, with the yellow squad winning 76-66.
“It was sloppy, which is to be expected … I thought they did some good things,” said Oregon head coach Ernie Kent. “Our bigs are good. For young guys they do a good job and play hard.”
The yellow squad featured a starting lineup of freshmen Josh Crittle, Matthew Humphrey and Teondre Williams, along with sophomore Kamyron Brown and senior Churchill Odia. Crittle led all scorers with 23 points and all rebounders with 13. Brown added 16 points and four assists, Humphrey pitched in 12 points and Williams had 10 points with a game-high four steals.
The green team starters were freshmen Michael Dunigan, Drew Wiley and Garrett Sim, along with sophomore LeKendric Longmire and junior Tajuan Porter. Dunigan led the green team with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Porter added 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
“We’ve got to get sharp in a lot of areas. We’ve only been at it for two weeks now so we’ve got a lot of work still to do,” said Kent of the teams’ overall performance.
It turned into a shooting contest down the stretch and not a pretty one, as the teams combined to shoot 10-for-40 from beyond the three-point line.
“Way too many threes jacked up in the game,” Kent said. “They’ll understand that particularly when you get fatigued you can’t shoot the ball that deep.”
Missing from the game were senior Frantz Dorsainvil and junior Joevan Catron. Dorsainvil has a thigh bruise and Catron sore ribs, according to Kent. He said both are expected to be ready to play Sunday in Oregon’s exhibition opener against Northwest Christian, 5 p.m., at McArthur Court.
“I wish we could have had Joevan and Frantz (tonight)” Kent said. “But they’re going to be
alright by Sunday.”
LeKendric Longmire left the scrimmage midway through the first half when he came up limping on his left ankle. Kent said the extent of the injury was unknown but he didn’t think it was serious.
Kent said it’s way too early to start predicting the rotation yet, adding, “We just play through the exhibition. It’s more about what needs to get ready for our first game.”
