The preseason watch list for the 2008 Jim Thorpe Award includes three Oregon defensive backs among its 40 candidates.
Senior rover Patrick Chung and junior cornerbacks Walter Thurmond and Jairus Byrd were selected as players to watch for the award, given to the nation’s top defensive back.
Overall, seven Pacific-10 Conference players were named to the list, which will be narrowed to 10 players in November.
Chung was a second-team all-American last year, leading the team in tackles. Byrd led the conference with seven interceptions, while Thurmond recorded the second most tackles on the team in 2007.
