Oregon sophomore A.J. Acosta was named Wednesday to the U.S. under-23 team for the NACAC Track and Field Championships, held in July 18-20 in Toluca, Mexico.
The competition is held every two years, with 32 countries from North America, Central America and the Caribbean participating.
Two athletes were named to the U.S. team in each event, with 78 athletes overall. Acosta was named to the 1,500m.
Acosta won all-America honors at the 2008 NCAA outdoor championships in June in the 1,500m, finishing ninth. He ran in the same event at the U.S. Olympic Trials in July, held at Hayward Field.
Acosta wasn’t the only athlete with Oregon ties named to the roster. Henry Miller of Portland in the 3,000m steeplechase; Stayton’s Jared Swehosky in the 20 kilometer race walk; Tualatin’s Meghan Armstrong in the women’s 10,000m; and Portland’s Annie Hess in the women’s discus.
