You know you have a deep field when the 2004 Olympic silver medalist doesn’t crack the top five times of the season. That sprinter, Lauryn Williams, still has the speed to get back to her second Olympic Games, but she’ll have to run past sprint darling (and third-ranked in the world) Allyson Felix and leader Torri Edwards for another bid. Williams is currently ranked 17th in the world with her best time of the season of 11.13.
Hooker not only has the fourth-fastest time in the 100 meters but could sneak in a bid in the 200 meters as well. The 100 will give her her best shot, however, currently ranked third in the world. A former Texas Longhorn, she’s won the NCAA title in the 100 in 2005, plus two indoor titles in the 60 meters and the long jump.
Edwards has the top time but it is more than 13 months old, ran in Carson, Calif., last May with a barely legal wind limit of 2 meters per second. She has come close to that mark recently, running a 10.94 at the Prefontaine Classic on June 8 for the win. She finished 2007 ranked second in the world in the 100, and she has another great shot at her second Olympic team.
