It’s just Joey Harrington after all.
The Oregon senior quarterback’s bid to become “Joey
Heisman” fell short Saturday when Nebraska senior
quarterback Eric Crouch was awarded the Heisman Trophy
at a ceremony in New York.
Harrington, the first Duck to be a finalist for the
award – given to the country’s best college football
player – finished fourth in the Heisman voting with
364 points. In the fourth-closest race in the 67-year
history of the award, Crouch (770 points) beat out
Florida’s Rex Grossman (708) and Miami’s Ken Dorsey
(638).
“There was something deep down inside that said,
‘Eric, you want that trophy,’” Crouch told the
Associated Press. “But win or lose, I knew I would be
the same person – keep my character and keep
composed.”
Crouch and the Huskers scored another victory Saturday
evening when No. 2 Tennessee had their Rose Bowl hopes
spoiled by No. 20 Louisiana State. Nebraska, No. 3 in
last week’s Bowl Championship Series, may now have a
chance to play for the national title against Miami
(11-0) in Pasadena.
Many have speculated, though, that either Colorado
(9-2) or Oregon (10-1) could jump Nebraska when the
final BCS poll is released Sunday.
If Nebraska gets the nod, Oregon and Colorado will
likely play in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day.
