Even though “The Secret Life of-” is The Veronica’s debut album, most listeners will probably end up thinking, “Haven’t I heard this before?” The Veronicas follow the footsteps that pop rock chicks such as Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavigne have set. Any of the songs on this album could have been performed by either Clarkson or Lavigne, but they just happen to be sung by The Veronicas, made up of 21-year-old identical twins Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, two Australians who initially gained an American following after opening for pop star Ryan Cabrera.
But that’s not to say that this album isn’t any good. Fans of Clarkson will most likely be thrilled with this release, which is filled with rocking pop tunes such as the singles “4 Ever,” “Mouth Shut” and “Secret.” Nine of the 12 tracks on “The Secret Life of-” were written in part by the Origliasso sisters, who also collaborated with Max Martin, a songwriter who has helped the likes of Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys and Jon Bon Jovi. Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, the man responsible for Clarkson’s hits “Since U Been Gone” and “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” also lent his talents to The Veronicas.
The album ends on a strong note, covering Tracy Bonham’s 1996 release “Mother Mother,” a rocking tune that will bring back memories of the angst-ridden mid-’90s.
“The Secret Life of-” is a strong debut album, but The Veronicas are a little short on originality. This is a release for true poppy-rocker-chick fans, and if that genre of music isn’t a favorite, steer clear.
