The ASUO Women’s Center is offering two scholarships for students to help pay for textbooks. Each student selected will receive a $50 certificate redeemable at the University Bookstore or Smith Family Bookstore.
In a press release, the Women’s Center stated that the scholarships are for single parents and nontraditional students, but Women’s Center spokeswoman Stefanie Loh said the group will award the certificates to “whoever needs them most.”
“It’s not always easy to make ends meet,” Loh said.
Fewer than five students have applied for the scholarships, Loh said, but the group has yet to decide on winners. Loh said that if the Women’s Center finds three worthy students, it will split the money between them. Loh said that while the scholarship will not pay for all of a winning students’ textbooks, it will help them to continue to be successful at the University.
“It’s not much,” said Loh, “but it helps.”
Loh said that the scholarships are part of an annual program, and next year four will be available.
The scholarships are limited to full-time students who have an average G.P.A. of more than 3.25. Students can find applications at the Women’s Center in Suite 3 of the EMU, and they are due April 7.
