The first day of the Pacific-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., brought mixed results in singles for the Oregon tennis teams.
The only man who survived the first round was Vlad Pino.
Pino first beat Stanford’s Dave Ryan 6-3, 6-3, then went on to win 6-4, 7-5 against UCLA’s Jaysen Chung.
Pino will face Stanford’s Blake Muller in the quarterfinals today at 11:30 a.m.
The Duck women fared better, with three freshmen all advancing to the second round.
In the first round of the main draw, Carmen Seremeta took down Washington State’s Aleksandra Cekic 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (3), while Ceci Olivos scored a 6-3, 6-3 straight sets victory against Cekic’s teammate, Amy Toth.
Playing in the other draw, Claudia Hirt advanced to the second round after a 6-3, 6-0 win over Stanford’s Jessica Leck.
All three freshmen would eventually succumb to defeat in the second round. Hirt lost 6-4, 7-5 to Marion Ravelojaona of California, while Olivos was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Cal’s Susie Babos.
Seremeta almost took the first set of her match against Laura Gordon. But she eventually lost 7-5, 6-1 to the Golden Bears.
“We played well,” Oregon women’s coach Nils Schyllander said. “The girls had a lot of chances against some of the best players in the country.
“They have nothing to hang their heads about.”
Dominika Dieskova, ranked 45th, is out of the tournament after a 6-1, 6-1 loss to USC’s Lindsay Nelson.
Monica Hoz de Vila and Jamie Marshall also fell to their opponents in the first round.
Sophomore Anna Powaska withdrew from her first round match because of a knee injury.
The championships continue through Sunday.
