John Shelby Spong, a retired bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, will speak at the University tonight in a speech titled “Who is the Popular God in Public Life in the 21st Century?”
Spong, whose books have sold more than 1 million copies, is considered an expert in making contemporary theology accessible to the lay person, according to a University press release. In his recent book, “The Sins of Scripture: Exposing the Bible’s Texts of Hate to Discover the God of Love,” he seeks to introduce people “to a proper way to engage the holy book of the Judeo-Christian tradition,” the release states.
The free lecture starts at 7:30 p.m. in Columbia 150.
