I have been following the ongoing debate in the Emerald concerning The Insurgent’s recent portrayals of Christ and critique of Christian culture and wanted to respond with a couple questions: Where were the Christians last year when the Commentator attacked multiple minority groups on campus causing death threats to be made against members of our community? It is my understanding, as a Christian, that we are supposed to stand up for others and speak against injustice as Christ did, coupled with a compassion for people. Where are the Christians now that marginalized groups on campus are fighting for fair and equal treatment through alterations to the proposed Diversity Plan? No Christian groups are present to fight against racism and phobias on our campus unless it is directed at their community.
Christians like to ask, “What would Jesus do?” but they fail to respond appropriately. Jesus would have done exactly what he did, stand up against tyranny and oppression. And even today it would be his own people that would crucify him because we crucify him every time we fail to stand up for other people and speak out against violence in our community. Christ was not a Christian. And he was more than a man who spoke out against oppression and died for it. He was a revolutionary proposing that all people are worthy of love.
