Amy Harris tossed the 13th no-hitter in Oregon softball history Sunday as the 22nd-ranked Ducks wrapped up the Palm Springs Classic with a 3-0 victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (7-5).
Harris, who improved to 5-4, allowed only two baserunners – one on an error and the other on a hit by pitch. She struck out four.
Oregon (9-7) split six tournament games after losing three of its first four.
Oregon lost to No. 10 Oklahoma (13-3-1) 1-0 in the opener last Thursday. Harris, who walked the first batter of the game, retired 13 straight and didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. The Sooners executed a double steal with two outs in the fifth to score the only run of the game. Harris finished with eight strikeouts and two walks.
On Friday, Oregon found some offense to defeat No. 8 Texas A&M (10-6) 13-7 before losing to No. 19 Baylor (9-5) 9-6.
After allowing a run to the Aggies in the top of the first, the Ducks scored four runs in the bottom of the first and another seven in the third inning.
Kayleen Hudson smoked a grand slam in the bottom of the first against the Aggies and finished with five runs batted in. Breanne Sabol and Joanna Gail each had two RBIs for the Ducks as well.
Against Baylor, Oregon allowed four runs in the top of the first inning. Oregon clawed its way back to a 6-5 deficit in the fifth inning, but Baylor answered in the top of the sixth with an RBI double.
Oregon’s Suzie Barnes stroked a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the inning to again close within one run, but the Lady Bears added two more runs in the top of the seventh to end the scoring.
Harris earned the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in three innings. Beth Boskovich had two RBIs for the Ducks.
Lovena Chaput nailed a three-run walk off home run to finish Saturday’s competition against Oklahoma State (2-9) with a 4-2 victory.
Oregon trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning before Barnes led off with a single. She was sacrificed to second by Sari-Jane Jenkins and Sabol walked before Chaput reached the plate.
Earlier in the day, Oregon lost to Ohio State (6-8) 6-0. Ohio State pitcher Jamee Juarez hit three home runs and gave up only two hits to earn her fourth victory of the season. Juarez finished with five RBIs.
Next, Oregon plays in the San Diego State Tournament beginning Friday at 9 a.m. against Loyola Marymount (7-5).
