31Nestled in a west campus neighborhood, Cornucopia is a low-key eatery with a casual atmosphere and friendly staff.
My dining companion and I had no trouble getting in early on a Saturday evening, but by the end of our meal, the restaurant was starting to fill up.
Upon entering Cornucopia, the eye is drawn to the colorful decor and wide variety of beer. Cornucopia has about 150 bottled beers and 10 beers on tap, including Cornucopia’s house beer, Frog’s Wart. There was also a wide variety of wine available, including 15 house pours and 35 other bottles.
Cornucopia’s menu is filled with sandwiches, pastas, salads and more. Although the menu offered a wide variety of promising entrees, my companion and I knew what we were ordering before we entered: burgers and beer.
Although my palette is far from refined, I do know a good burger when I eat one. Cornucopia’s burgers were impressive.
I ate the Wild Bill’s Barbecue Bacon Burger, a hearty burger with bacon, barbecue sauce, lettuce and onion (as a result of my picky tastes the latter two ingredients were absent from my burger). My dining companion ate a bacon cheeseburger, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
We burger veterans were both impressed by our meals. Our server suggested the house brew, which nicely complemented our meal. The staff was friendly and attentive.
Cornucopia’s atmosphere is casual, just the way I like it. There were a few couples out on dates, families sharing a meal and buddies meeting for a beer.
Cornucopia has a chef’s special on Valentine’s Day, although what that special will be is yet to be determined. The eatery would be a good place for a couple who wants to celebrate the occasion but doesn’t want to deal with a snooty, expensive restaurant. Corn ucopia is equally attractive to a group of single guys or gals who want to meet for a beer and gripe about the corporate nature of this Hallmark holiday.
Cornucopia is located at 295 W. 17th Ave. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information call 541-485-2300.
