About 250 fraternity and sorority members will get more than flowers and chocolates for Valentine’s Day: They’ll also get condoms.
That’s because today is not only Valentine’s Day but is also National Condom Day, and to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, a group of University students will deliver condom-grams to students in the greek community.
“We wanted to do something a little different this year, to do something fun on campus,” said senior Keith Metz-Porozni, a member of Allen Hall Public Relations. “Obviously HIV is a serious worldwide problem, but to draw attention to this issue, it’s good to be lighthearted in some respects.”
Last year, representatives from the HIV Alliance passed out free condoms at a table in the EMU. The organization also had a mascot: Captain Rubber.
The condoms this year were also donated by the HIV Alliance. They were packaged with 10 sayings on them, including “Because life is complicated enough” and “Use me,” Metz-Porozni said.
The greek community was chosen to participate because its organizations made it logistically easier to distribute the condoms, he said.
