Bill Moos, who announced his resignation Monday after nearly 12 years as Oregon’s athletic director, will receive almost $2 million over 10 years in an agreement he signed to leave the University, The Register-Guard learned Thursday.
The funds will come entirely from private donations spearheaded by long-time Oregon donor Pat Kilkenny.
The agreement between the University and Moos also disallows Moos from taking athletic director jobs at any BCS schools west of the Mississippi River during the 10 years or soliciting any Oregon donors to benefit a different school.
“Bill is a person of ability and value, and obviously it’s in the university’s best interest to make sure that doesn’t turn into the competition,” University President Dave Frohnmayer told The Register-Guard.
Moos said Monday during his press conference that he desired to resign in order to spend more time with his family and to start a cattle ranch in property near Spokane, Wash.
Moos has had a rocky relationship in the past with top donor and former Nike CEO Phil Knight, which many have speculated is the reason for the lack of sufficient funding for Oregon’s basketball arena project. Knight, so far, has not contributed to the project and it is believed he did not contribute to the $2 million paid to Moos.
