Ric Mortera, Oregon’s newest men’s tennis player and a former No. 1 junior player from the northwest region, was awarded a scholarship, tennis director Nils Schyllander said.
Mortera, a Portland, Ore. native, is a transfer from Cal and was ranked among the top 20 players nationally prior to his collegiate experience.
“We are very excited that Ric has decided to return home and play tennis for the University of Oregon,” Schyllander said in an Oregon press release. “He will make an immediate impact upon the team when he joins.”
Mortera is transferring to Oregon after he enrolled at Cal but did not participate in the fall season, giving him immediate eligibility this season.
He is the former United States Tennis Association’s Junior National single and doubles champion. Mortera also finished third at the USTA Super Nationals.
Mortera was the 2005 state singles champion as a senior at Jesuit High School (Portland, Ore.). He won team MVP four times and was selected as a High School All-American during his senior year. He was labeled a four-star recruit.
This weekend the Ducks will play at the ITA Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif.
