Nicole Garbin’s three-goal performance against the Arizona schools last weekend was impressive enough to catch attention from the national soccer community.
Garbin’s outstanding play earned her Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week honors. Garbin was also one of only two Pac-10 players to be named to Soccer Buzz magazine’s Elite Team of the Week.
“All these awards that I’ve been getting, they all definitely mean something to me, just because the Pac-10 is so tough and there are all these great players around,” Garbin said. “Wow, I’m just really honored, and it feels really great to be recognized among all these elite players throughout the country.”
The Wailuku, Hawaii native was responsible for every goal that Oregon scored last weekend. The Ducks won 2-1 at Arizona, and then beat the Sun Devils 1-0 to open their Pac-10 season 2-0 for the first time in school history. The Ducks are now tied for the top spot in the Pac-10 standings.
Garbin’s six points over the weekend brought her career points total to 73 (29 goals, 15 assists), bypassing Chalise Baysa’s 69 points from 2001 for most points scored in school history.
With her five game-winning goals this season, Garbin is tied with UCLA’s Lauren Cheney for the Pac-10 lead. Her seven goals this season are second in the Pac-10.
Garbin last won Pac-10 Player of the Week during her sophomore year in 2003. She is the first Oregon player to ever win multiple Player of the Week honors, and the second Oregon player to win the award this season. Oregon goalkeeper Emily Zaler was named Player of the Week on Sept. 19.
