: The Wachowski Brothers (Larry and Andy) have delighted fans with their work on “The Matrix.” Now they have added writing the screenplay to this dark and gripping movie about revolution and hope to their repertoire. Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore, “V for Vendetta” is the story of the vengeful character “V,” who hopes to free the English people from their government.
“V for Vendetta” has great dialogue containing memorable quotes and dark humor. It is masterfully acted by Hugo Weaving (“V”), who proves that even a character who wears a mask for the entire movie can still have a strong presence on screen. One can sense his emotions behind the porcelain mask, ranging from fear to rage to love. Natalie Portman (“Evey”) begins as a victim but becomes V’s ally and has her own spiritual awakening.
The two discs are full of documentary material about the making of “V for Vendetta” and include a piece on the process of transforming London into a futuristic city where freedom and justice struggle to survive. The DVD also contains a 15-minute segment called “England Prevails: V for Vendetta and the New Wave in Comics,” which examines the movie’s roots as a graphic novel.
