Twice last month, our free speech plaza was visited by groups who aim to shock, judge and alienate us, and turn our usually peaceful community into a circus. Yeah, I’m talking about the confrontational evangelists and the Genocide Awareness Project. What do we do about these folks? Some suggest reasoning, some prefer obscenities. My advice? Don’t let extremists run your circus. Start your own, right there on the plaza. Sing holiday carols, play strip poker, do the hokey-pokey. Have some fun and let your circus grow, whether you’re liberal or conservative. Haters can handle being hated back, but if they’re out-spectacled, they may just leave.
