The School of Journalism and Communication opened the new George S. Turnbull Portland Center on June 7, providing a new Portland-based location for undergraduate and graduate students to study and intern.
The center, named after a former University journalism school dean and professor, is slated to offer degree programs by fall 2006.
The programs offered at the center, which are still under review by a faculty committee, will offer master’s programs in management communications and a “senior experience” that combines senior-level coursework and public relations internships, according to a University press release.
Nike, Columbia Sportswear, Waggener Edstrom and Edelman Public Relations are among the organizations participating in the internship program.
“The opening of the Turnbull Center is the first step toward realization of a long-held vision for the school,” Tim Gleason, dean of the journalism school, stated in a press release. “In Portland, we’ve seen a number of new and exciting ways in which we can serve students, working communications professionals and the Portland community.”
In January 2008, the University also plans to open the Portland Center, which will specialize in architecture and allied arts and law.
