After back-to-back trips to the east coast, the Oregon lacrosse team likely can’t wait to get back home.
The Ducks lost both of their non-conference matches this weekend in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
Georgetown’s five-goal torrent in the first half helped the No. 10 Hoyas pull away in an 11-8 victory against Oregon (3-3, 2-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) on Friday in Washington, D.C.
The Ducks led 3-1 after juniors Jen May and Kate Fleming and sophomore Alison Leiner netted goals. Georgetown senior Coco Stanwick’s offense helped deny Oregon an opportunity to pick up its first-ever victory against a ranked non-conference opponent by registering four of her six goals during Georgetown’s scoring tear. Stanwick finished the match with a game-high six goals and added an assist and five draw controls.
The Ducks turned the ball over a season-worst 24 times, while the Hoyas (1-1) controlled 14 of the 21 draws in the contest.
May finished the game with two scores, including an unassisted goal four minutes into the battle that gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead. Eighteen seconds later, Leiner nailed a goal off an assist from Fleming, who won a draw control to set her up.
The Hoyas led 6-4 at halftime, and outscored the Ducks 5-1 before senior Brooke Dieringer notched the match’s last three goals in the final 3:39 of action.
Sophomore Anna Poponyak gave up all 11 goals, but made 14 saves as Georgetown outshot Oregon 39-13.
Despite hat tricks from Ilsa van den Berg and Fleming on Sunday, Oregon could not withstand the three-goal performances from three University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) players and did not match the final goal scored by a Retriever in overtime.
Although they jumped out to a two-goal advantage to begin the contest, the Ducks were outscored 4-3 in the first half, thanks in large part to Retriever Kelly Fahey, who netted the last two goals of the half. Oregon reeled off seven goals in the final 30 minutes of the game to send it into extra minutes, but UMBC’s Abbey Swift ultimately scored the decisive goal with 58 seconds remaining in overtime.
Theresa Waldron added two goals and Dieringer and junior Jana Bradley each scored one goal in the loss. Sophomore van den Berg, who recorded her fourth three-goal match of the season, also registered an assist for a game-high four points on the afternoon. One of her goals was a free position score with 2:08 remaining, which tied the match and pushed it into overtime.
For the Retrievers (3-2 overall), Swift, Fahey and Kara Dorr each netted three goals. Swift and Fahey also clocked in assists to match van den Berg’s game-high four points. UMBC’s goalkeeper, Kate Quick, had eight saves. Oregon freshman Sam Debow notched six saves after she was substituted ten minutes into the match for Poponyak, who suffered a knee injury. She underwent an MRI yesterday and more details on her status for upcoming games will be known today.
After playing their last four games on the road, the Ducks come home to host four teams for the next week beginning Thursday against St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m. at Pape Field.
