The University Health Center will no longer be open on Sundays starting April 4. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Currently, the center is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
“We needed to change our hours because of limited community resources on Sundays,” health center Director Tom Ryan wrote in an e-mail.
On weekdays and Saturdays the health center will provide urgent care services to students, which is equivalent to those available in the community, Ryan said. Physicians need access to on-site X-rays, an advanced laboratory, imaging and consultation with community medical specialists, none of which are available at the health center on Sundays except through an emergency room referral.
“When we consulted with the University Counsel, they felt that there could be risks to students due to the very limited community resources available to us on Sundays,” Ryan said. “As a result we had no choice but to discontinue Sunday hours.”
An after-hours nurse advice line is available at all times when the health center is closed at (541) 346-2770. A nurse will evaluate the patient’s problem and make recommendations regarding appropriate care, Ryan said. The recommendations may vary from going to the community urgent care or emergency center to home care using over-the-counter supplies. Ryan added that the health center will increase same-day appointments on Mondays to help students who can’t be seen on Sundays.
