Sixteen and counting.
The 17th-ranked Oregon softball team won its 16th and straight game Thursday – already a school record – after defeating No. 23 Georgia 5-0 in the first round of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Honolulu.
The Bulldogs and the Wahine marked Oregon’s first ranked opponents of the season but the Ducks (16-1) marched right through them and now have not lost since falling 2-1 in the season-opener against Florida.
Against the Bulldogs in the afternoon game, the Ducks’ received a gem from ace Alicia Cook, who improved her record to 10-1 on the season. She pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking just one. Ann Marie Topps, thanks in part to a 10-mph breeze over the left-field wall, connected on her eighth home run of the season with a solo shot in the second inning, giving Oregon a 1-0 lead and the Ducks added two runs in the third and fourth innings to build the lead. True-freshman right fielder Neena Bryant finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
