Student Senator Nate Gulley will have to wait two more weeks to know if he will be sanctioned for a list of infractions that includes possible defamation of other senators.
Senate Ombudswoman Natalie Kinsey motioned to have Gulley suspended for three weeks for these actions, but a section of the ASUO rule book states that disciplinary motions may not be discussed until the second regularly scheduled meeting after the meeting in which the motion is made.
Kinsey gave notice at a March 14 meeting that she would be making the motion, which accuses Gulley of several conduct violations including voting on a matter in which he had a conflict of interest, swearing during Senate meetings, and defamation of other Senators.
The decision to seek sanctions against Gulley was brought on when he accused 10 other Senators of making “racist attacks” against student programs in a statement that appeared in a March 14 issue of the Emerald.
At the March 14 meeting, Kinsey read from a statement informing Gulley of the charges she would bring against him.
Senate President Sara Hamilton originally removed Kinsey’s motion from Wednesday’s agenda because the ASUO rule book requires 72 hours written notice that a motion to discipline a Senator will be made. Kinsey submitted the written motion on Monday – too late to meet the 72-hour deadline.
Kinsey was eventually allowed to make her motion, but the rules require that no action can be taken for two more weeks.
