Former Oregon men’s basketball forward Adam Zahn will continue his career with the Eugene Chargers of the International Basketball League, the team announced on Wednesday.
Zahn, a 6-foot-8-inch, 230-pound reserve for the Ducks last season, concluded his Oregon career by averaging 2.2 points per game and 1.8 rebounds in four seasons. He made two NCAA-Tournament appearances with the Ducks, one in 2002-03 during his redshirt season and again during Oregon’s run to the Elite Eight this past season.
Zahn averaged 2.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 9.5 minutes per game last season when Oregon finished with a 29-8 record. He started five games.
He is described “as an aggressive rebounder with eye-popping leaping ability and can run the floor well” on the Chargers’ press release.
Also according to the press release: “Zahn will add needed size to the Chargers roster and is projected to be an important part of the rotation in the power forward and center spots.”
The Chargers’ roster boasts another former Oregon big man in 6-foot-9-inch, 220-pound forward Jay Anderson, who played for the Ducks from 2001-04. Anderson averaged 13.4 points per game in 14 games last season.
The Chargers also announced agreements Wednesday with point guard Gary Lenoir out of Emporia State University (Kan.) and guard/forward Eric Orton, a former Eastern Oregon standout.
“One of my goals in player selection this year was to improve our depth,” Chargers’ General Manager Carl Berman said in the release. “The IBL is a very fast paced game and it is very important to have quality players throughout the roster in order to substitute productively.
“Adam, Gary and Eric will all significantly contribute to the team’s success.”
Eugene opens the season Friday night at 7:15 p.m. against the Salem Stampede, which features Salem-native Grayson Boucher, better known as “The Professor” from the And1 Streetball Tour, and former Oregon State standout Nick DeWitz. The Chargers also take on the Tacoma Jazz on Saturday. Both games will be held at Northwest Christian College’s Morse Event Center.
