The Student Senate allocated approximately $14,000 in funds from its surplus account in a short meeting Wednesday night.
Representatives from the Hawaii Club came to the Senate asking for $6,000 to cover extra costs of its upcoming lu’au, to be held at McArthur Court May 5.
Trevor Atkins told the Senate the lu’au has been happening since 1938 and is the largest single-night student event on campus. The size of the lu’au requires holding it at Mac Court.
Atkins said the Hawaii Club has fundraised an amount equal to 228 percent of its budget and has already spent thousands of dollars from fundraising on the lu’au.
There was little debate among Senators, who have commended Hawaii Club in the past for their fundraising efforts.
“Fabulous presentation,” Sen. Karen Trippe said. “I’m really excited.”
The funding was approved unanimously.
Senators also approved a request from the club women’s water polo team to take 16 players to the national tournament, which will be held in Massachusetts during the first weekend in May. That request, for $3,378, also passed unanimously.
The other requests of the night also passed with little trouble. The Black Women of Achievement received $500 to help pay speaker fees for their upcoming Women’s Empowerment luncheon on April 14, and Disability Services received $4,125 to fund a conference to be held this weekend.
