As members of Kappa Delta sorority in the Greek community at the University, we are shocked by Delta Sigma Phi’s glaringly obvious lack of support for Take Back The Night. On Thursday evening, we were appalled to see several brothers carrying a giant flag with the Greek letters Delta Sigma Phi. Oh, and they only wore underwear.
We don’t care if you didn’t know Take Back The Night was occurring. Is this routine behavior for Delta Sigma Phi? Do you regularly embarrass yourselves by running through campus half naked with a Delta Sig flag?
Your fraternity provided a perfect example of systematic negligence regarding sexual assault. The community gets one message: Fraternity men do not support sexual assault awareness or survivors. In our opinion, not only does this warrant an apology – specifically to sexual assault survivors, the wider community and the Greek community – but this necessitates the recognition of how much your actions have damaged the images of all fraternities at the University of Oregon.
People ask us, “Why are you in a sorority?” It can be difficult to justify a response in the face of such behavior. There is truly no excuse for your actions. Not only do you purposefully degrade a topic of epic importance, but you embarrass the entire Greek community. Our suggestion: The next time you choose to masquerade around campus wearing only spandex underwear and “proudly” flapping a flag emblazoned with the Delta Sigma Phi’s name, don’t think we’ll ever support you.
