Oregon’s club baseball team is one win away from playing in its first National Club Baseball Association championship game.
After upsetting top-seed Penn State on Thursday evening, Jay Tlougan helped the eighth-seeded Ducks continue their run by shutting out the three-time defending champion Colorado State on five hits. The defeat was the Rams’ first at the World Series since a 2005 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers.
Tlougan tossed a complete game, striking out six, walking three and facing just two hitters over the minimum in the win.
On Monday, though, Penn State threw a bump into Oregon’s road to the finals.
The Nittany Lions avenged their first-round defeat, shutting the Ducks down on five hits en route to a 6-0 win courtesy of starter Ryan Frankeny.
The loss sets up a win-or-go home situation against Penn State again on Tuesday at either 3:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m, both Eastern time.
Oregon ace Bryan Hansen will toe the slab for Oregon in the elimination game. Hansen beat the Lions in Game 1, 5-2. Penn State will likely bring back ace Peter Chaflin to oppose Hansen. Although he was tagged with the loss in game one, Chaflin didn’t pitch poorly. The righthander went six, struck out six, but walked seven.
Should the Ducks win, Tlougan would come back for the championship game on Wednesday night.
