Former Oregon football player Jackie Bates has transferred to Hampton University, the Daily Press in Hampton Roads, Va., reported earlier this week.
Bates, a 5-foot-10-inch, 180-pound cornerback, was a starter last season before he broke a bone in his lower left leg and was out for the year after Oregon’s second game of the season.
He was later suspended indefinitely for unspecified “conduct detrimental to the team.”
Bates was reinstated and set to return as a junior and one of Oregon’s most experienced cornerbacks, but he made his intention to transfer clear early in spring drills.
Bates came to Oregon out of De La Salle High School in California and started five games as a freshman. He started two games in his sophomore season behind experienced corners Aaron Gipson and Justin Phinisee. He concludes his Oregon career with 67 total tackles, two interceptions and 10 pass breakups.
Bates will be a part of a 26-man Hampton recruiting class regarded as one of the best in school history, according to the Daily Press.
“Jackie has exceptional cover skills,” Pirates coach Joe Taylor told the Daily Press. “We expect him to compete for a starting job right away.”
