A new advisory committee will soon offer students the opportunity to voice their opinions on how the University Career Center is run.
Assistant Director Dani Amtmann said officials at the Career Center have wanted to form a student advisory committee for quite some time, in the hopes of learning how to reach out to more students.
Amtmann said the new committee, which will meet once per term beginning this term and then starting again in the fall, will provide a way for students and Career Center staff to bounce ideas off one another.
When the staff have ideas for events or programming, they want to be sure students will respond well, Amtmann said.
“I’ll come up with an idea and I’ll think it’s a good one, but how do I know if students are going to say, ‘That’s totally lame’?” she said.
Amtmann said the Career Center serves a large number of students who come in on a regular basis, but the staff wants to reach those who do not utilize the services available there.
“We wanted to know for students who aren’t coming, what’s the reason?” she said.
Associate Director Clarice Wilsey said no one thing prompted the Career Center to form the committee, other than the fact that the staff wanted one.
She said she hopes serving on the committee will be a good leadership opportunity for the students involved.
Students on the committee will gain experience analyzing and problem-solving and can take those skills into the corporate world, Wilsey said.
Amtmann said the official deadline to apply for membership on the committee was Thursday, but she would “happily extend the deadline” if there is more interest.
