If the Springfield Chamber of Commerce has its way, the town could play host to the premiere of “The Simpsons Movie” in July.
Springfield, Ore. is one of 16 Springfields across the country competing to host the movie’s premiere, and today Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken will speak at the renovated Richard E. Wildish Community Theater in an event to answer questions and brainstorm ideas for the town’s entry into the competition.
Each competing city has to make a short film about itself to submit to 20th Century Fox, and the City of Springfield wants community input on what makes Springfield the prime candidate.
“Instead of having a regular meeting,” said Communications Relations Coordinator Niel Laudati, “we want to have an event where people can come in one place and give input on what they want to see (in the video).”
Even though few University students live in Springfield, Laudati said they still want input from young voices.
“We definitely would love to see University students there with their energy and their ideas,” he said. “‘The Simpsons’ has been on for 18 years, so it’s always been there. They have a history with ‘The Simpsons.’”
If Springfield wins the contest, the premiere will take place at either the Wildish Theater or Cinemark 17 in Gateway Mall, and it’s up to 20th Century Fox to choose a location.
The city is looking forward to promoting Springfield and looking forward to the positive press that could result from winning the contest.
“The Eugene/Springfield area is a great place to raise a family, great schools, great parks. (The video) will give us an opportunity to focus on the positive aspects,” Laudati said. “Anything that brings positive attention to the city is good.”
Tickets for the brainstorming conference are available at the Springfield Chamber of Commerce for free with a donation of two cans of food. Tonight’s meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Wildish Theater, located at 630 Main St.
There is no news yet on when a winner will be announced.
