This week, the University’s Greek system is presenting Derby Days, a five-day event in which sorority and fraternity members participate and compete in a variety of activities intended to raise awareness and donations for the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.
According to a press release, Sacred Heart and the Sigma Chi fraternity will partner together this week to raise awareness and generate money for neonatal children. Sigma Chi chapters nationwide support the CMN program at their local hospitals.
The goal of the CMN is to raise money for equipment and programs that serve Sacred Heart’s child and infant patients.
Derby Days is headed by Sigma Chi and will include such programs as spirited contests between sororities, fraternities, faculty and various student groups.
On Tuesday, a mural presentation will take place. Each sorority is to create a fun and uplifting mural to present to the children at Sacred Heart. The children will rate each mural and choose their favorite. The murals stay at the hospital and the sorority with the best one receives a certain number of points. The group with the most points at the end of the week will win the competition.
Monday through Wednesday, the men of Sigma Chi will have a stand outside the University Bookstore to collect donations for Sacred Heart. Each sorority will have its own bucket of change, and whichever collects the most money earns the highest number of points for that day.
Sigma Chi member Ian Gaffney said the grand finale dance competition is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 6:45 p.m., in the Student Recreation Center Bonus Room, which is in the lower level across from the turf fields.
