Oregon wrestling completed its 2007 regular season Wednesday night in Salem, taking seven of 10 matches from the Portland State Vikings and claiming a 28-12 victory.
The Ducks continued their domination of the lighter weight classes, winning the first five matches of the dual.
Sophomore Ryan Dunn scored a technical fall over Brad Caldwell, 28-13, to get Oregon out of the gate with a lead for the seventh time in 10 Pac-10 duals. Joey Lucas and Justin Pearch followed with major decisions and Jeremy McLaughlin and Zach Frazier won decisions to push the score to 19-0 before the Vikings got on the board at 165 pounds with Dale Seley’s 4-2 decision over Oregon’s Jake McCoy. Seley is Portland State’s top wrestler, one of just nine in the program’s history to post more than 20 wins in a season.
After the Ducks’ forfeit at 174 pounds, freshman Brysen French ended his seven-match losing streak with a 7-3 decision over Brian Lemmon.
Chris Dearmon finished the action with the meet’s only pin, just 1:31 into his match against Vikings’ heavyweight Zack Smith.
“I was pleased with how the guys wrestled tonight,” coach Chuck Kearney said. “They were able to get themselves up for the match on a short week of rest and many of them are wrestling well heading into the Pac-10 tournament, which bodes well for us.”
Next for Oregon is the Pac-10 Tournament, Feb. 24-25 in Bakersfield, Calif. The meet will be webcast live, free of charge, on Pac-10.org.
