The Oregon Marching Band braved the elements and defeated the Oregon State Marching Band 54-19 in the third annual flag-football game between the two schools.
“We’ve won every year now,” said junior Donnie Kim, who was lead organizer, and added that the margin of victory has grown annually.
The battle of the marching bands took place at Autzen and is held in the opposite town that the actual Civil War game takes place. Kim said that the first year, they played on the marching band practice field, which is the turf near the rec center.
There was a steady rain during the game. Kim said that it was cold the last two years, but it didn’t rain.
“This is the worst weather we’ve had, but I’m glad we played,” he said. “Football’s so much better than rain.”
The game featured actual referees who officiate high school and college games, and Steve Perot, sousaphone section leader, acted as announcer.
As for the massive blowout this year, Kim said, “It felt good,” adding, “but we’re all friends and we’re there to have fun.”
Kim helped organize the first matchup three years ago with former member Travis Ratliff – both of whom played football in high school. “Dr. (Eric) Wiltshire thought it was a good thing, so he’s all for it,” he said of the OMB director.
“I will be making sure it goes on next year,” said Kim. “And I’ll be recruiting a lackey to make sure it continues.”
