This week a mixed media display will draw crowds to the Laverne Krause exhibit in Lawrence Hall for the art school’s seventh showcase this fall. The exhibit, including sculptures by five presenters, videos and multimedia, will run all week and will celebrate the featured artists with a 7 p.m. reception Thursday.
The gallery plays host to the Mixed Media Group Show featuring masters of fine arts students Annelise Ostenberg, Jessica Hickey, Crystal Gregory, Annmieka Hopps and bachelor of fine arts student Benjamin Cooper.
The artists agreed that publicly showing their art is deeply personal, but exciting.
It will probably be the only time some of these pieces will be in a gallery, the artists explained, and they have to force themselves to let go at some point and accept the final product.
“(The pieces) become our babies,” said Gregory, a masters of fine arts student in the fiber department.
Hopps, also in the fiber area, agrees that the pieces feel personal and are an extension of their selves. She starts with an idea and it then grows and changes and takes on a life of its own, she said.
“After that long working on it, you just have to accept it for what it is,” she said.
The Lawrence Hall gallery changes weekly, and previously this term has shown student work in digital arts, mural painting, large format and photography.
Upcoming exhibits will show the next installment of the mixed media group with a show featuring work by Jane Snar, Katie Nusbaum, Jessica Weitzel and Sonjin Park, running Nov. 12 to Nov. 16th. Opening Nov. 19 is the Photography Show, featuring work by students Joshua Jalbert, Aaron Forman and Rani Robison.
The last exhibit of the term, opening Dec. 7, is the Mixed Media Group Show.
