The Oregon women’s soccer team rallied back from a 2-0 deficit against Oregon State to finish in a 2-2 double overtime tie Friday in Corvallis.
The tie, the Ducks’ third this season, sets the squad’s record at 8-7-3 overall and 1-3-3 in the Pacific-10 Conference.
Najma Homidi scored in the 16th and 26th minutes to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Freshman Jill Jensen responded in the 35th minute when she fired in a goal from point-blank range off an assist from Dani Oster and Teresa Bowns.
“We lost our heads after that first goal, which we’ve done sometimes this season, but after that, we played like we were going to win, like we wanted to win,” coach Tara Erickson said in an Oregon press release.
With about 6:33 left in the match, Nebraska transfer Jessica Goodell evened the contest on a strike from 15 yards out that was set up by freshman Mercedes Walters.
“The Civil War comes down to heart, grit and determination,” Erickson said. “Oregon State was feeling pretty good after 25 minutes, but our kids totally battled back to dig out of a 2-0 deficit. I’m real proud of the effort it took to do that.”
When junior starting goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield exited the game with just under a minute remaining after colliding with OSU’s Jodie Taylor, Corvallis native and freshman Tori Johnson replaced her.
Volleyball falls in three
The No. 19 Oregon volleyball team, spent after a four-game loss to Stanford the night before, was swept by California in Berkeley, Calif.
The defeat, losing 30-23, 30-28 and 30-23, gave Oregon its third consecutive loss and left the Ducks at 16-9 overall and 5-8 in the Pacific-10 Conference. No. 8 Cal improved to 19-5 and 9-4 in the Pac-10.
Oregon now returns home for a two-match homestand with USC and UCLA.
The Ducks struggled offensively with a .213 hitting percentage, while making 19 attack errors and nine service errors.
Oregon’s Gorana Maricic was the lone Duck with double-figure kills with 10. Sonja Newcombe slammed home eight kills, while Heather Meyers had seven. Nevena Djordjevic had 18 assists and Rachel Morris had 15.
Libero Katie Swoboda had 13 digs and Newcombe had eight.
Oregon led 9-6 in game 1, but Cal tied it at nine, went ahead 16-12 on an Angie Pressey kill and won, 30-23, on a Hana Cutura kill. In game 2, Oregon was again ahead early, 10-7, but in an evenly played game, Cal scored the final four points for a 30-28 win. Cal led almost from the start in a 30-23 match deciding win in game 3.
