The Oregon men’s basketball team wrapped up its two-game exhibition schedule Tuesday night, in front of 8,236 at McArthur Court, by defeating Concordia University 86-57.
Oregon was led in scoring by senior forward Maarty Leunen with 18 points on six-of-eight shooting. Sophomore forward Joevan Catron was next with 16 points and seven rebounds.
“I thought my big guys played well,” coach Ernie Kent said. “I think Joevan is showing that he’s gonna be somebody who’s going to be difficult to guard and certainly somebody that’s going to help us be better this year in terms of what he brings to the table.”
Catron lost more than 25 pounds this offseason and said that it has helped his game on both ends of the floor.
“This year I feel a lot more fluid running up and down the court,” Catron said. “I can move a little better.”
The game was never in question, with Oregon jumping out to a 25-9 lead in the first 10 minutes, but it never turned into a blowout thanks in large part to turnovers by the Ducks. Oregon finished with 23 turnovers to 19 for Concordia.
“That’s too many turnovers in a game like that,” Kent said. “But that’s what exhibition games are for, to show you those things.”
Five of those turnovers came from freshman guard Kamyron Brown, though some of them were by no fault of his own other than making a pass his teammates weren’t expecting.
“He made some incredible passes that kind of caught guys by surprise a little bit,” Kent said.
Brown finished with two points and five assists in 22 minutes.
Oregon next hosts Pepperdine Saturday, 4 p.m. at McArthur Court.
