As expected, 22-year-old Aaron V. Heyer was sentenced to 19 months in prison this morning for not stopping after he hit and killed Brian Reams with a car in early March.
Heyer, who arrived an hour late to the sentencing, cried while he apologized to Reams’ family and friends. There were nearly 50 people there, and all but two were there for Reams.
“I wish every day that I could take it back,” Heyer said. “It’s something I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life.”
Reams’ mother, Debra Reams, gave a speech before the verdict was read that drew dozens in the courtroom to tears.
“I had him for a long time,” she said. “I still do. I’m sad all the time and I can’t really believe that I’m never going to see him again.”
Heyer will face three years of parole and his license will be revoked for five years following his release.
