I want to thank Randy Collins for his honest and moving guest commentary in Friday’s Oregon Daily Emerald. The truth is, in an ideal world, we wouldn’t need a “Coming Out Day” or diversity training, or any other system or celebration to encourage people to be open-minded, empathetic, and honest. But as progressive as we’d like to think we are, we’ve still got a long way to go.
Mr. Collins’ observations serve as a reminder that real progress takes more than policy and rhetoric; it takes patience, compassion, and courage. I’m thankful to live in a community that identifies itself as progressive and accepting, but I think we should all be grateful for insights like these that make plain just how much work we have ahead of us.
