When CononcoPhillips took over Union 76, they began to remove the icon’s famous orange orb from stations in the west, prompting 3,000 people to sign a petition asking ConocoPhillips to rethink the move.
The revered balls live on as a beacon for drivers along the West Coast in need of a fill-up.
University student Amira Dughri used this display of affection for the 76 ball to create a commercial that could win her a $20,000 scholarship.
“What I did was pull quotes from the petition,” Dughri said. Dughri had her actors say paraphrased quotes that showed how much the 76 ball meant to those who worked to save it.
The 25-second commercial can be seen at my76video.com, where people can also vote for Dughri’s video. Voting ends Friday, and those who register with the site can win $500 in gas from 76.
Dughri also has the potential to win the People Have Spoken Award which includes a year of 76 gas.
A week’s worth of filming and three or four days of editing could win this self-described journalism super-senior another year’s worth of tuition.
“My financial aid is null and void so it would be really nice,” Dughri said.
