Maarty Leunen and Bryce Taylor were included amongst the finalists for the U.S. national team that will play in the Pan American Games later this month.
They were selected from a pool of some of the best college players in the United States after a series of five trials over a three-day period. Leunen and Taylor – seniors who helped lead Oregon to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season – were joined by Washington State’s Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver as Pacific-10 Conference representatives in the group of finalists.
“This was definitely the most difficult choice we’ve ever had to make, but I just love this group. I think we have great options,” Villanova and U.S. coach Jay Wright said of the selections.
The team will continue training through July 18 at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and July 19-21 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. before the team leaves for Brazil. The final 12-player team will compete in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro from July 25-29.
