The University announced Thursday it has selected a new head for the Department of Public Safety.
Kevin Williams, who currently works for the Lane County Sheriff’s Office will begin work Aug. 31, according to a press release. DPS has been without a permanent director for more than four years.
Williams worked as a police officer in Los Angeles for 20 years and has been with Lane County for two years. Williams is responsible for bringing Tasers into the Lane County jail and is in favor of arming DPS officers with Tasers. He also said he would support turning DPS into a full-blown police department.
As director, Williams will be in charge of 70 people and parking services on campus. During his visit to campus in July, he expressed that he has ideas to alleviate parking pressures at the University.
Williams said his family has acclimated to Eugene life and declared a love for Duck football.
