The Ethnic Studies department will begin its four-part film series on globalization next week to discuss contemporary global issues, including culture, labor and politics.
The first event, titled “Perspectives on Globalization: Love, Politics and Global Media,” will feature a three-hour film called “Dil Se” (From the Heart).
After the film, University professors will facilitate discussion about ethnic perspectives on globalization.
Irmary Reyes-Santos, University ethnic studies instructor, said she expects the discussion to delve into the “logic of globalization” and the “role played by global media in the articulation of political trends and our imagination of ‘terrorism.’”
The subsequent films will cover transnational capital and governance, migrant labor and culture.
Reyes-Santos said she wanted to organize a film series to teach the different meanings attached to the word globalization.
“Globalization is a very contested term,” she said. “Hopefully, our conversations will complicate our use of the term and raise awareness about the need to question its celebratory adoption by academic institutions, cultural projects, the state and the corporate world.”
The film series begins at 6 p.m. in 240A McKenzie Hall and will take place every other Wednesday throughout the term.
