Unofficial election results Wednesday morning show Vicki Walker, D-Eugene, has defeated Jeff Miller to remain the District 41 representative.
Walker trailed Young throughout Tuesday night, and hourly updates had Miller leading by a few hundred votes. But Walker told her supporters at the Lane County Fairgrounds not to worry about the early numbers and said, “You watch, they’ll change.”
Walker left the fairgrounds at about 11 p.m. Tuesday and could not be reached for comment.
Walker’s win is one of many victories for local Democrats. Phil Barnhart beat Dr. Bill Young and Karl Sorg with 70 percent of the vote for District 40. Peter DeFazio beat his opponent, John Lindsey, with 74 percent of the vote, to retain his seat in Washington, D.C.
The Lane County Election Office reports a 78.5 percent voter turnout as of Wednesday morning.
The race for president continues to hinge on a Florida vote recount. Florida elections officials said the recount must be completed before the office closes Thursday. Whichever candidate wins the state’s 25 electoral votes will also win the White House.
Oregon’s seven electoral votes also continue to be up for grabs. Continue to check the Emerald online and our print issues for updated results, turnout and election analysis.
