Ah yes, it must be March. With the upcoming ASUO elections now comes a flurry of letters, commentaries, grievances, fights, shouts, anonymous e-mails, tears and very lastly, an election.
Ever since coming to the University, I have been shocked by the behavior of our student government. The ASUO acts worse than high-schoolers. There is more drama in a Senate meeting than at a homecoming dance. No wonder there is a lack of student support and involvement. I left high school once; I see no reason to become involved in that mess again.
Yes, I know you all work hard. Yes, I know you have great responsibility with the positions and money you have been charged with. Yes, I know I am welcome to come and try to change things. Can I just suggest that you all take a moment to collectively grow up? Good grief, you are in college! This is not a pissing match over whose toys got stolen yesterday, or who brought cookies and didn’t share. There are real issues here.
Until there is a cooperative effort to make the ASUO a place of discussion and maturity, it will always be a yacht club of those who wish to pad their résumés and settle old scores.
