The Oregon State Beavers (15-6 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10 Conference) took two of three games from the Oregon Ducks (11-14, 1-2) in the first Civil War of the new era.
On Friday in Eugene the Ducks fell 7-1 in the first game. The score was 3-1 Oregon State going into the top of the ninth inning, but three Duck errors helped Oregon State score four runs to pad its lead.
Freshman pitcher Tyler Anderson (1-3) started on the mound for Oregon and got the loss. He went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Beaver starter Tyler Waldron (2-1) went 7.1 innings and gave up just one run on five hits.
From the plate, senior outfielder Caleb Tommasini went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Oregon. Senior outfielder John Wallace led the Beavers with three RBI’s, a walk and a run scored on one hit.
The venue switched to PGE Park in Portland for the last two games of the series. In game two, Oregon earned head coach George Horton his 500th career victory and their first Pac-10 win of the season.
Horton was suspended for three games after contact with an umpire during the team’s loss to Washington on March 22. Saturday was his first game back.
Freshman pinch-hitter John Adamson provided the heroics, singling home Tommasini in the bottom of the tenth inning. The game was scoreless through six innings until the Beavers scored runs in the seventh and eighth to take a 2-0 lead. Oregon tied it up with two bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the eighth and after a scoreless ninth, the Ducks evened the series in the bottom of the tenth.
Freshman pitcher Erik Stavert went 6.2 innings for Oregon, giving up five hits and one run. Sophomore closer Drew Gagnier (1-0) earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Freshman reliever Sam Gaviglio (3-1) was credited with the loss after going 1.1 innings in relief.
Tommasini was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.
Beaver starter Jorge Reyes (4-1) won the 8-1 finale on Sunday, going seven innings while giving up just one run. He struck out six and gave up two hits, and the Ducks ended with three hits for the game.
The Beavers scored three runs in both the second and fifth, and one run each in the first and third inning to take an 8-0 lead to the sixth before Oregon got on the board with a RBI fielder’s choice from junior center fielder Curtis Raulinaitis.
Junior pitcher Bennett Whitmore (1-4) started on the mound for Oregon, but he only lasted 1.2 innings. Whitmore gave up four runs on three hits and walked two. Only one of the runs was earned, however.
Next up for Oregon is a single game with the University of Portland at PK Park. Game time is 3 p.m.
