The 88, a Los Angeles-based band that opened for Smashing Pumpkins and once served as Elliott Smith’s backup band, will perform Tuesday in the EMU Fishbowl at noon.
The 88’s songs first garnered attention when the band formed in 2003 and have since been featured on The OC, Grey’s Anatomy, Laguna Beach, The Real World, One Tree Hill and Weeds. In 2003, The 88 released “Kind of Light,” followed by “Over and Over” in 2005.
Its core members include Keith Slettedahl, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter; Adam Merrin, keyboardist and songwriter; and Anthony Zimmitti, drummer.
On its Web site, the band’s members explain the significance of its name: “88 keys on the piano. 88 constellations in the sky … The most auspicious number in China. 88 mph to get Back to the Future. 88 cities in Los Angeles … a great French Kicks song. Welcome to the world of 88.”
Admission to the EMU concert is free.
