The University men’s tennis team matched up with two strong southern California teams this weekend, taking on No. 9 UCLA on Friday and No. 6 USC on Saturday.
The Bruins proved too much for Oregon to handle as they coasted to a 7-0 win. UCLA improved its record to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in Pacific-10 Conference play. The loss put Oregon at 9-11 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10.
Freshmen Ayrton Wibowo and Jose Izquierdo each pushed their singles matches to three sets, but both came up short. UCLA also swept doubles play, which included a tough loss for Oregon’s doubles tandem of juniors Alexander Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco. The 8-4 loss was their second in the last eight matches.
The Ducks had similar results on Saturday as No.6 USC swept them for the second time in two days. Oregon had no answer for the Trojans’ strong doubles play, which carried over to singles later in the afternoon. USC finished the day with a 7-0 win and improved its record to 17-4.
The 9-12 Ducks will host No. 21 Stanford this coming Friday, and No. 27 California on Saturday.
