Born in southern France, singer Marianne Dissard moved to the U.S. at age 16. Now in Tucson, Ariz., Dissard is sometimes known as “that French Rose Girl downtown.”
Describes as “Chanson meets Americana,” Dissard’s French-language debut album “L’Entredeux,” was released in 2008. With lyrics exploring love and identity, Dissard draws from inspirations in Mexican food, French wines, old adobe houses, old westerns and musician Django Reinhart. Referring to the albums name, which means “in between two,” an album review on her MySpace page asks: “Is it the space between two countries, two languages, two lovers? The space where one hand lets go and floats free of the old?”
Dissard is a poet, political activist, filmmaker and multimedia performance artist.
Her 1994 film, “Drunken Bees,” tells the story of Tucson band, Giant Sand, and her multimedia performances have been exhibited at various museums in France, including the Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris. Dissard’s 5-piece band, featuring guitar, drums, violin, and upright bass will perform at the Wandering Goat on Tuesday, May 5 at 8 p.m.
